"Passing of the Third Floor Back" by Jerome K. Jerome focuses on a run-down boarding house in London, home to assorted residents. Many of them cling precariously to their social positions. When a mysterious stranger moves into the squalid house he manages to swiftly change the lives of everyone who comes into contact with him. Though initially an outcast, this new tenant soon earns the respect of his neighbors and eventually becomes the one they turn to when in need of help.
