Published in 1847, Jane Eyre tells of a mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer only to discover that he's hiding a terrible secret. Jane Eyre is Charlotte's most famous novel and is firmly established in the literary canon. Jane, an orphan maltreated throughout her childhood, goes to work for Mr Rochester as governess to his ward, Adele Varens. Although at first scared by the brooding and sometimes formidable man, Jane realises she has feelings for Rochester after seeing his more tender side. However, there are complications in store, not least the strange mystery of the noises from the attic, and who or what could be making them.
