"Hagar" by Mary Johnston is the story of a lonely girl who grows up in a very conservative southern family with old-fashioned values, which include knowing her place and never wishing to grow in life. The book is an early argument for the emancipation of women against the people in the world who would wish to pigeonhole them into decided roles with no room for escape or to find their true calling in life.
