This novel is still as current today as when it was written in 1907, as it deals with complex moral and ethical dilemmas, The central characters are John Amherst, an idealistic manager in a New England textile mill and his wife Bessy, who has no times for his philanthropic and ethical values. Also in the mix is Justine, employed by Bessy to tutor her daughter.
