This work is set in the Ptolemaic era of ancient Egyptian history and focuses on the survival of a dynasty bloodline guarded by the Priesthood of Isis. The Priesthood charges the main character Harmachis to defeat the suspected impostor Cleopatra, drive out the Romans, and restore Egypt to its golden era. Haggard's portrayal of Cleopatra is incredible and reveals her wit, betrayal, and overwhelming presence. All the characters in this work are mixtures of good and evil and evoke pity and contempt.
